This year we're doing a group effort of trying to get a "The Bolvar" reference into the game (hopefully new dk starting zone)

Yeah the patch hype thread was new for BFA.

All secondary magic schools are vague. The Light, Void, arcane and fel are fairly clear cut, but anything else gets strange.

Is fire just a subfield of light magic? Are earth, water and wind magic nature magic? Or is nature magic the combination of them? Storms seem to qualify as all three. Is shadow magic distinct from void magic? Is frost magic distinct from water magic?

It's not vague, it's ignoring some distinctions. Shaman magic is a different beast than Mage or Warlock, but all three can invoke fire. But they do it in different ways and from different sources.

There's more than one way to arrive at a desired effect, and typically more than one school of magic that can create it. A proper model will have overlaps, so your questions are impossible to answer without specifying what kind of magic was used to create the effect.
Is a magical storm Nature magic? If it was created by a Druid, yes. If it was created by a Mage or Shaman, no.

BTE and pistol shot are ranged abilities for outlaw. And assassination and sub have shuriken toss/poisoned knife. Doesn't make any of the rogues spec feel close to being ranged.

And wow i got off work 2 hours ago and went on a run, 20+ pages go by lol.

I didn't say if nade them ranged, I'm saying the use ranged magical attacks (spells). Shuriken and bullets aren't magic.

Launching necromantic tendrils at someone and giving them a disease from 30yds away is definitely magic.
