I'll be the first to be scratching my head wondering why he's so worried about toppling Obamacare at this particular time. There could be a hundred other things he could be trying to chip away at if his true goal was to win supporters to his side. I guarantee getting people off healthcare (me included, and my parents, who would be destitute right now without Obamacare) will only doom this president. He needs to stay in his lane and not take away the one thing keeping me alive.
Besides what @Elegiac and probably many others say, Trump could ride to the rescue and come up with a solution that would be literally better than nothing. The fact that he caused the nothing, of course, would be glossed over.
That said, you're still right. There are only two ways something gets through of this magnitude:
1) It's so good it's bipartisan. That won't happen here.
2) The Democrats flip the Senate and Biden wins the election. Then, they can pass whatever they want.

I have a few quick questions about the COBRA insurance. I was laid off last week after 13 years @ KPMG. We get one week of severance for every year and part of that is the same rate in COBRA (until that sev period end), that we had with employer provided insurance. Are you saying I should skip cobra because I could get an even better deal with ACA?
Well, I simply figured I would pay for the COBRA, the same way I was paying bi weekly because its covered for 13 weeks. I dont plan on being out of work for that long, but I do want to take a month off ~ or two.
I just dont want to pay ~ say 600 for COBRA, when I could pay 350 for ACA.
I would check. ACA with the subsidy will definitely be lower than Cobra. Depending on your age, even if you don't qualify for subsidy, it may even be lower than Cobra. If you are in your 30s or 40s, I guarantee it will be lower than Cobra. I plugged in a 39-year old single person making 40k a year into the Covered California, and gold is $313/month and platinum is $371/month. You should just check at the TX website for ACA.
Now if you are old like me and make too much to qualify for subsidy, gold is $727 and platinum is $840. It will keep going up till I hit 65. To be precise 3 months before I hit 65 I would qualify for Medicare and the number will drop. A LOT!!!
I called that age discrimination.

KPMG. Either accounting or programming. Ah, I just read KPMG is laying off a bunch of their IT group. Sorry about that.

Whenever a young person brags about how they're going to "retire early"... I always throw that wet blanket on them.
None of them ever factor in medical insurance. How it escalates once you pass 40.
Or assume they have a condition that requires routine treatment or pharmaceuticals. Or having a spouse with a condition... then it's all about putting off retirement as long as possible to hang onto as many benefits as possible.

Are they still paying their half of the total COBRA cost?
That would be rare and very nice of them.
If they are still paying i would keep it, can't imagine you could get something better on ACA unless your income is below 40k and you start to get subsidies from ACA.
Remember you can keep COBRA and once the limits on COBRA expire the loss of your insurance is a "life" change even if that happens 6 months after you lose your job. The loss of the job is not the qualifying event, its the loss of the insurance and that date.

Loss of health insurance
You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you or anyone in your household lost qualifying health coverage in the past 60 days OR expects to lose coverage in the next 60 days.
But I would still price out an ACA plan anyway.
it takes just a few minutes and depending on your income so far this year you could even get the same coverage for a lot less.
I showed in the post in this thread how you can get amazing plans for very little even in states like Oklahoma.
It comes down to your income, the state and locality and how many companies are offering plans in the exchange.
Here in the northeast its a lot in most places.
Not many employers offer 1000/2000 deductibles/out of pocket.
Of course like anything some plans on the ACA suck total ass and have $8800 deductibles.
Every state lets you price out a plan without having to sign up. I have yet to see one that does not.
They also let you put in drugs you take to see total cost for each plan drug benefits.
This is the national ACA site:
This is for example the State of NY site'

Hell tell me some random zip code in the county and i will tell you the income limits where you start to get subsidies and what the non subsidies cost is.
Tell me your deductible and out of pocket in your current plan and we can see what they are offering.
Hell IM me your state and i will tell you what the cost is for the biggest counties in the state...unless you are in CA then holy hell I'll be here all day :P
like i said you don't need a PHd to do it online. i would figure working at KPMG you should have no problems running through their cost calculators even on the worst run state exchange sites.
Buh Byeeeeeeeeeeee !!
If you live in the Dallas area you could always use Parkland Hospital for emergencies. You would need to fill out the financial assistance paperwork to quality for free care. But going based off of experience of some family members who I had to take there that place is very crowded with wait times of 7-8 hours.
Not a place I would recommend as a long term solution, but if you're looking for something to provide health care as a safety net just in case something happens while looking for a new job it might be worth looking into.
Oh i see your profile and the city/state.
Single Subsidies start at 49,999 or lower. @ 40k = $84 subsidy a month @ 30k $211
Family subsidies start at 67,000 or lower @ 60k =$331 @ 40k = $559
Family + 1 kid Subsidies start at 85,999. @60k = $611 @ 40k = $623 and kid qualifies for free Medicaid no ded/out of pocket.
Single plans- No subsidies: 40 years old. 59 plans available.
$265.24 - 8k deduct 8,150 OOP -
$272.64- $6,800 / 8150
$302.11 - 5500 / 8150
$363.63 - 0.00 / 8150
$481.88- 0.00 / 8150 - includes vision and dental
etc etc. Those rates above would be offset by any subsidies you qualify for
You would then have to figure out what plans best for you.
For example if you take no drugs then a plan with a $32 dollar cost for each drug would be better for you then a plan with 5 dollar copays if it was to save a hundred dollars a month on premiums.
Always watch drug cost, they are usually the "got ya" in ACA plans.
Check out the cost of generics vs preferred.
You are lucky to have a lot of options in the city and state you live in.
Family plans- No subsidies: spouse 40-45 years old
Plans start at -
$530.48 16,000 (8k each /8150 each)
$604.22 - 11,000 (5500 each -8150 each
$727.26- $0.00 / 8150
$963.76- $0.00 / 8150 - Visions and dental
Those rates above would be offset by any subsidies you qualify for
Family + 1 kid: 45 yrs 11 yrs No subsidies
$689.25- 16k /8150
$785.06- 11k /8150
$944.93 -0.00 /8150
Those rates above would be offset by any subsidies you qualify for
Even at 60k you get $611 discount. So a ZERO deductible plan would cost you 334.00 a month
Took me about 10 minutes to do all that.
There are a bunch more tools on TX site that lets you calculate total cost per year based on your usage to help you decide which plan in the end cost you the least.

Im a Sr. .NET developer. Ive got a few interviews lined up already. My skills are in good demand and Im a US citizen. Being a software developer and being a US citizen, means I can look at data and develop applications that offshore India teams are not legally allowed to even look at.
@Zan15 Thanks for the info man. My employer is paying for their part of my insurance in COBRA for 12 more weeks. So I will stick with that for now. But Im def going to take a look at the ACA if my insurance lapses or I dont get any jobs from my interviews. I never realized how complicated and in depth health insurance actually is. I just kinda had it the whole time and never looked back.

Yeah, it was really odd too man. I usually have nothing bad to say about KPMG, at all. They know how to take care of their employees.
BUT
I found out during my exit interview that they had planned this since Nov 19, had us train offshore India Hexaware team to support our apps, and cut us as soon as they could handle the support load. I was honestly shocked he would admit that to me during an exit interview, especially after telling me and my team that we were going to move into offshore development management positions. . . . . but wutevz. They cut 350 Dallas/StLouis/Montvale IT workers and developers, all of us replaced by Indians.
