Our govt. already approved them for the elderly and medical personnel that has increased risk factors due to personal health.
It'll probably just be a matter of time until they approve it for the general public but WHO so far is against it. They say that it would be more useful to give the doses to developing countries to get the global vaccination rate up instead of developed countries hogging more resources.

My point was: The researchers at Imperial College, who classified it as lockdown, incorrectly pushed the narrative that lockdowns and only lockdowns were the NPI that could reduce the spread of the disease. That was likely quite influential in shaping the policies of last year - but as shown the analysis was simply lacking - it's more complicated and it seems that other NPI also work and lockdown doesn't work that well.

That other NPIs work to some extent is even more important when a large portion of the population is vaccinated which likely mean that less intrusive measures can be used. Additionally we are now getting new tools: At least France, Italy, Denmark (soon) use the covid-passports internally - something that wasn't possible last year.

So, yes, it was 100% relevant.

And I don't see where you are going with your "no true lockdown"; they wanted comparable countries so they used countries in Europe that were fairly comparable. Welding apartment doors shut is generally seen as a bit excessive; and as previously stated India scored 100% on the lockdown-metric without stopping the pandemic.

Related to this (see below) the lockdown in Malaysia has been fairly strict seen May this year (they have never been fully open since it started), and cases and deaths are now rising fairly quickly - and it seems unclear if they will be able to stop it.

There was some concerns last year that their lockdown would negatively impact the production of condoms worldwide; as they are responsible for perhaps 20% of the world-wide production - but that problem didn't seem to have appeared so far.

One of the most baffling thing about the pandemic is the lack of outrage at how limited in capacity and quantity our hospitals and their supplies are. It should be obvious by now running hospitals purely with a profit motive has been an utter failure. There's no drive for reform politically even as we are going through this complete clusterfuck.

Well staffing and supplying a hospital to pandemic levels and then increasing it even more 365 days a year would be a massive cost to patients.

Not saying it shouldn't be done, but in a normal year you are no where near capacity and it still cost over a Trillion dollars a year to run all of our hospitals in this country.

So what do you do when bed levels go back to historical norms and the majority of them are empty but still need staff and supplies?

In the US non profit and govt/state run hospitals still outnumber for profit hospitals by a huge margin.

Honestly I know working in the healthcare/insurance field in the past if you didn't know the hospital's profit/non profit position you really would hardly be able to tell the difference in the way they are run, staffed and managed.

Also there has been a hell of a lot more investments in medical infrastructure by for profit organizations then non profit or govt run facilities.

I think you meant the average age of hospitalization is Judge Hidalgo explained the average age of COVID patients is 20 years younger than before. They are starting to see patients in their 30s and 40s.

8/5- Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said the Texas Medical Center hospitals admitted more than 300 new COVID patients in the last 24 hours.
Dr. David Persse says the healthcare system in nearing a "breaking point" as cases continue to surge.

Well so what? What does everyone else have to worry for? Houston’s public health authority said at the start of this press conference, one out of every four HFD ambulances were waiting to offload patients at full emergency rooms.

“This weekend, we transferred a patient from the Houston area…do not fall out of your chairs…to North Dakota!” Dr. Persse said.

Dr. Persse said between 85 to 95 percent of covid patients in local hospitals are unvaccinated.

Oh and texas keeps denying request from local area hosptials for emergency staff...cause....reasons...

p.s a quick google shows texas is hardly by itself in disaster zone. few other states are at capacity or the breaking point in their health care systems
    Appreciate the correction.

On Saturday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 23,903 new COVID-19 cases for Friday. The day before was another record-breaker: 22,783 new novel coronavirus cases. On Saturday, the state recorded 13,747 hospitalizations related to COVID, with 2,750 patients in intensive care units statewide. On Saturday, the state also reported 93 new deaths, a day after reporting 199.

On a more positive note, we got the results of my wife's chest x-ray and tomography scan. No scarring, no cloudiness and the black dot has not increased in size. Her lungs look the same as they were 2 years ago. The Moderna vaccine did its job.

Even during pandemic, assuming the majority of the population follow proper protocols, ICU bed capacity should not be an issue.

I am going to sound like a broken record, but SF is a good example. At no time during the pandemic did it ever run out of ICU beds. It came close, but that's because it was taking Covid patients from Southern California (LA and Imperial counties) and Central California.

Currently there are 34 Covid patients in ICU in SF. However, the City/County has an ICU bed capacity of 286,

How do hospitals plan their ICU bed capacity? Assume that the population will follow proper health protocols or that the majority of the population are dumb and selfish?

Well there are actually 3 numbers. ICU normal, ICU expanded and ICU clusterfuck put them in any room/parking lot/closet.

You can technically convert any room/wing to an ICU if you can get the equipment and staff in.

The equipment is the "easy" part its just a matter of money, effort and being able to order and have it arrive.

The Staff is the problem since it takes more training, more of them, more specialist and more money for each one of the staff because of the extra training/skillset.

Ramping that up is the hard part, its not like ordering new equipment it takes a long time to train and staff another ICU wing.

That's why they were asking for the state govt to help.
They have access to things like military staff that can be called in to staff an whole new ICU wing for a limited time. They can get funding to have people shipped in from Low COVID area's. etc etc

As far as how they plan the ICU capacity, its based on the wonderful art of statistics of the population and its health that they service. Only problem with that is it takes historical norms and puts a little in for emergency situations.

Like any "actuarial table" type of statistical analysis it sure is not going to be able to plan for what happened with COVID.

They can plan now but I can bet every hospital did not expect there to be yet another round of "stupid". Also what does a hospital do, plan for a pandemic long term? Do they train, staff, equip normally for a pandemic going forward? What do they do with that multi million dollar wing and its staff when its no longer needed?

Its a horrible position to be in and plan for. Even non profits can be put out of business if they make the wrong long term moves.

Americans Lying to Get Third COVID Shot: 'I'm Not Going to Wait Another 6 Months"

Data from the CDC indicate that roughly 900 people across the U.S. so far have received a third vaccine dose, according to the Associated Press. The real number might be even higher, as the numbers available have been voluntarily reported.

Gina Welch, a chemistry graduate student from Maine, reportedly received a third vaccine shot by telling the clinic that it would be her first. Welch, for her part, said that she has been closely following the predictions of physicians and scientists, and did not want to wait six months for booster shots to be formally approved. She felt especially concerned for her wellbeing amid the resurgent pandemic, as she suffers from asthma and liver condition

Political cartoonist Ted Rall wrote about his decision to pursue a third vaccine dose in The Wall Street Journal. For him, the final straw was reading reports of millions upon millions of doses going bad in certain areas with high vaccine hesitancy. He also explained that his desire for a booster shot was due to his long history of health problems, including asthma, swine flu, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Why I Got a Third Covid Shot
Better safe than sick, and I have a history of respiratory problems.

Anyway, since we have all these extra doses, why not. I am actually thinking about it. All we have to do it go for a weekend trip to Sedona, AZ, and get a third shot there.

Odd here they required ID and we were entered in the VARS system. I wonder if i could get away with it?

Though i had two shots and a severe case of Covid, i wonder if technically i would be as protected as someone with 3 shots?

hmm, just looked it up on the state site guess you can get one and refuse or feign having an ID

    Lulz.

All the areas marked in gray in Utah, Nevada and Oregon are basically either desert or wilderness areas.

The one spot marked in gray in CA is Modoc County which has the lowest population.

I did not check all the gray areas, but I have a feeling the same probably hold true for all of them.

That map is basically saying the entire US need to wear mask.

Yep. You can just say that you have no ID and no insurance. They may look funny at you, but they'll still give you the shot. That's why we got tourists groups from all over the world coming to the US just to get vaccinated.

Former Newsmax and right wing nutjob radio host dies from Covid, after telling people, with broken English and bad spelling to not get the vaccine or mask up.

Here are some examples of what he said, and I quote:
“power tripping lying freak,” about Fauci
Vaccine Bogus Bull Shid!, Two peeps I know, got vaxed, now have Corona, hospitalized critical. Thank you Moderna, FOR NOTHING!
“Why take a vax promoted by people who lied 2u all along about masks.” while he called Fauci “FOOT-chee”
Then days later after he contracted Covid, in the hospital he writes to friends to get vaccinated.

The best part is his friend saying, "I can only say this was so unexpected."

Like... railing against masks and vaccines while living in Florida, then catching COVID as a 65-year-old man and dying? "So unexpected"?

Carnival Cruise boat returns with postive cases.

I just want this shit to be managable. To the point we have people walking around as plague walkers turning vacation boats into plague ships.

Now cruise ships are instituting mask policies. I feel bad for the people trying hard to make it work but society just isn't there.

As expected, based on usual voter ID issues during elections, it was kind of obvious that no ID would be required for vaccinations.

Pretty sure it was Fauci that said a 3rd shot will just increase the quantity of antibodies, not the quality of them. A person with 2 shots who then gets sick will increase their immune efficacy.

Probably should go without saying, but purposefully going out and getting sick on purpose post vaccine is a terrible idea and wasn't what he was suggesting.

Here is the hospitalization in the US by hospital system. The two big orange areas in California are Mono County and part of Inyo County. They are orange because they are covered by the Las Vegas hospital system which currently has a large number of Covid hospitalization.

    - - - Updated - - -

FL kept breaking record. Hospitalization is 13,793, up from 13,747 from Saturday. ICU is 2,767, up from 2,750. 24.4% of all Florida hospital patients are classified as COVID-19 patients — compared with 8.7% nationally. As for ICU beds, 43.8% of those are taken up by COVID-19 patients in Florida. Nationally, that number is 19.4%. No new cases number from Saturday. However, the number from 08/06, which was 20,133, was almost 5 times that of CA on the same date which was 4,129.

Florida, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi account for half of US new Covid cases and hospitalization. Of those, Florida and Texas account for about a third of new coronavirus cases and almost 40% of hospitalizations in the country.
