Or 'did' to be exact...
I'm not ashamed in saying I like the Spice Girls and still enjoy their songs but I remember in the hayday of their career a few movies and TV made reference on how awful they are and was curious if that was accurate

No, they're shit tier.
20 years ago maybe. I had a teenage sister in the late 90s/early 00's so Ive heard a lot of them.
They were pretty popular among the girls when I was in middle school. Certainly not today, but that's how pop music works.
Just watch the Emma Stone on Graham Norton spice girls clip and that'll tell you.
They were pretty big in America for a year or two in the 90's. I worked in a toy store (yay teenage job availability) during the Christmas season, and the hot toy that year was the Spice Girls dolls. We had to hide them at the counter and limit each customer to a 2 doll purchase limit. Considering there were 5 (4 maybe?) Spice Girls, that didn't go over well.
They were a female equivalent of the boy bands that were popular back then. Very popular for about 3-4 years.

this was in 2012. ok, in the UK Spice Girls are ofc more remembered than in US.
For their music? Hahaha, fuck no.
For their natural talent as spankbait? Fuck yes.
