You haven´t changed the religion, the countries became less religious. That is quite a difference. Christians still discriminate gays, fight abortions, arange marriages and prosecute atheists (if possible). So your point is moot.
And about the synonym... look at the previous page.

Ok?
Am i missing something? Is the oxford dictionary a worse source than the unesco on synonyms of words?!
If you look at that statistic:
Gaza had the largest percentual on justifying suicide bombing attacks. (39%) For some reason I'm not surprised. They have some real shit there.
But look at the rest of the data. You can see that percent on "never" is actually quite big. Tunisia 90%, Jordan 55% and so on.
Those who justify attacks are a minority by FAR.
And one thing I couldn't find on the site. How many people were attending on this survey? I mean that is a real deal breaker in the end.
If you have 3 grapes and one is rotten, 30% of grapes are rotten. Make it 100 grapes with 1 rotten and the percent is 1%.
Islam this, Islam that... you people... really?
Some of you need to do some theological research about "Islam" and what it actually entails. And it's different branches in the same religion.
Saying Islam is evil is like saying Christianity is evil because one only has to look at the westboro baptist church to see that they are evil reincarnated...
Overgeneralization seems to be a thing nowadays.

Thing is you are arguing three things: the religious doctrines, the organizations and institutions managing them and the people supposedly following them. You can judge people by their behaviours. You can judge an organization or institution for its agenda and a religious doctrine for its values. People often try to nail everything down to a common overarching theme, may it just be religion or ideology in general or a specific religion or ideology which can be tricky because religions are often a mix of confessional beliefs and local traditions and cultures as they merged together historically (hence why Ethiopian Christianity differs from Anglicanism). This doesn't work well and will always get you in a situation where you are either accused of generalization or *phobias.
Western civilization used to pride itself with beating religious doctrines with science and reason while still developing humanist ideals which are still rooted in Christian religion, same religion which managed to burn thousands of innocent men and women on stake, had crusades going on. How's that possible? Answer: It's the institutions you have to focus on when looking for the causes. These institutions had some remarkable figures and some pretty disgusting ones all who changed and steered the agendas over the centuries. Finally, the common people went with it all the time. They rarely questioned what was going on and just complied with any agenda and doctrine.
In the end Christianity is no more oppressive than any other religion in its inert state. It is not even organized. Early Christianity was a hodgepodge of wild and sometimes syncretic ideas about the character and nature of Jesus that it took centuries to get people sorted out with the help of the sword, words of power, debates, councils, intrigues, anathemas and careful exile of heretics (this is how Christianity came from Constantinople to China btw). It was the development of doctrines and organizations which made it to what it is today. The reason why people recognize the latent oppressive nature of Christian dogmatism easier than that of Islam is because it is closer to us, it is permeating our culture still even if people decided to turn away from it. Islam not as clearly organized as Christianity is and because Christianity's roots were during the Roman Empire which was basically the epitome of an organized state and the churches until today still emulate the Roman structure. Islam however was not originally identified as backwards, in fact it used to enjoy a Golden Age with a lot of scientific progresses and a fairly open and tolerant culture. What changed? The problem is that they had been stuck in a mode where they rested on laurels until, around end of WWI, the first radical movements showed up.
So, it clearly is possible for them to live in an open society like us, even a change in adherence of traditions is possible. The problem is not just falsely understood tolerance but also when to strike a balance and when not. Often greater issues precede supposedly very important but comparably minor ones and that's where most of the conflict lies. Why should I care about headscarves when the greater issue is that a group of people doesn't want to live in a democracy at all? For me that even takes a backseat to gender inequality (which is even still an issue in Western societies). I can convince them of that, no problem, but first things first.

Yes, you can criticize 'A' Muslim for wanting Sharia Law, just like you can criticize a Christian for hating on gay people. The problem in threads like this is the generalization. I for example am not about putting those criminals in jail for what they did. But I am against increasing the hate/fear towards Muslims for what they did. It is equating being Muslim with wanting Shariah Law, while not equating being Christian with hating gay people that I find hypocritical.
The infracting is weird, yes, but I don't see why this thread is still open to begin with. There already was a thread about this incident like, when it happened. What new, positive discussion could come from it now? It was only opened because the op wanted to throw more old oil into the fire, it seems.
