    Exclamation Fel Reaver!

They're pretty iconic, right? Immortalized on Hellfire Peninsula, brought back for the Legion invasions, and cast in a starring role for the Wrynn cinematic. I think a lot of us have fond memories about the first time we were surprised by one back in BC. Maybe we jumped out of our seats a little bit, mashed some random highly ineffectual buttons, and got stomped into that red clay. After we recovered, we had a good laugh about it.

I've seen a couple people argue recently that only idiots were ever surprised by the Fel Reaver. Have to admit, they don't seem very sneaky with all the noise they make and ground they shake. Hard to explain how it happened (more than once, for some of us) I've also seen some argue that dangerous mobs like this have no place in WoW.

So let's have a show of hands. For those of you who ever ventured there as a 58-60 first timer (overgeared and heirloomed alts don't really count), how many of you had at least one memorable encounter?

I seem to recall being ambushed after dealing with a big bunch of boars.

It's rather a shame they haven't been around Legion more.

I agree, fel reavers should at least be all around the place during invasions.

When you have this questing tunnelvision and are probably a bit distracted by being in a whole new zone, it could happen quite well. After you learned your lesson, you probably paid more attention to the wandering doom machine.

Fel Reavers is the mob that caused me the most deaths in TBC...
    Fact (because I say so): TBC > Cata > Legion > ShaLa > MoP > DF > BfA > WoD = WotLK

It caught me by surprise a couple of times. I think it's nice to have certain things that's scary and easily avoidable like that. "Oh, I better avoid that!" It makes the zone feel a bit more vibrant when it has elements that sticks out like this.

The removal of "sweepers" is one thing I think has definitely harmed the game, albeit in a minor way.

These sort of mobs, which provide a strong threat and a sense of tension to lower level players, also gives them something to strive for. Players innevitably return at a higher level to get revenge, and in turn become "heroes" to the lower level players being threatened, giving them another thing to strive for.

That said, with the game operates right now, utilizing level scaling and sharding and dynamic grouping, I'm not sure world bosses like this can ever really function the same way they did back in the old days.

Yes, I once was scared by it, and after that I was careful.

To be honest, an easy and effective way to have a similar feeling is by having the world bosses patrol around the map they spawn at. That way you have a different area which is dangerous each week, thus having unpredictability, too.

Back in TBC there were no ground shakes just noise. So it wasn't that rare to get stomped if you played with music/sound turned off for whatever reason.

Edit: IIRC Blizz introduced camera/ground shakes with new exotic hunter pets in WOTLK prepatch.

I swear they muffled the sound/shaking until it was too late. By the time you heard it... But maybe that was because hearing it and the ground shaking made me press all the wrong buttons.

Would love patrolling world bosses. Having a huge Pitlord surrounded by an army of Wrathguards casually stroll down the roads of Broken Shore killing any player who doesn't move out of the way would be great. ^^

    Son of Arugal
    Devilsaur
    Fel Reaver

I'm sure there were other elite mobs roaming around zones since vanilla, but those are the ones I remember most. Freakin Devilsaur was like a ninja. You never saw it until it was too late.

Died to it while not having sound on, was... fun.

I dont know, the fel reaver back in TBC was hilarious, it would come over and stomp you randomly if you weren't paying attention.

In legion we have that two headed piece of crap that patrols that section of high mountain. It's not fun, its just annoying, maybe because it patrols such a small area

So Im not sure how Id feel about a fel reaver in legion on the shore.

Was the first day of The Burning Crusade launch, we were flooding through the portal and the Fel Reaver was basically pinning down groups at a time.. Back then, I had a shit graphics card.. So.. I rode ahead, charge!... A big foot loads RIGHT in front of me... Next I see, was my bones on the ground with a few thousand others..

Back in Burning Crusade, things didn't become visible at a distance based on their size, as they do now. Everything became visible when it got within X yards of you. So the Fel Reaver would become visible at the same distance as a boar would. Basically when it's almost on top of you. This helped make it more scary than it is when you go to Outlands these days and can see it a mile away.

Why not? Surely they can just leave out scaling for this one mob and set it to max level+2 or something.
