Preeetty sure that's just fan-art (and I don't spot the typical signature Blizzard would put on their art-work) so hard to blame WoW/Blizzard about it! But otherwise yeah, WoW has never been 'too' serious but that design just makes her look more laughable than frightening in my opinion.

Full plate was more of a knight's armour in the medieval times, at least for the time when ranged weaponry was not strong enough to penetrate armour. As soon as ranged penetration was enough to get through full plate, this type of armourment was gone, and was replaced by something more practical (=better options for movement). Also, such suits of armour have been very expensive, another reason why normal troops surely had less metal to protect them.

Well most weapons in WoW are unwieldy, many races flat out use weapons wrong at that. Given we have people throwing balls of Lava at people and gnome have laser swords, realism goes out the window.

And in what way is it "not okay"...? I'm struggling to see why you people are so outraged about revealing armor in a video game in the first place. If we're going to pander the game around individual tastes, the game will come crumbling down soon enough since everyone has shit he/she don't find "okay". Hell, I've seen people that are not OK with the concept of transmog, people who want us to look like the pieces we're wearing again...

There is a reason that soldiers in the real world wear leather instead of plate or chainmail. You really underestimate the weight of a set of plate armor.

...Nooo? Full plate armour weights around the same as the military equipment they'd wear these days. However, they were smart enough to make it so all armour wasn't weight on your shoulders alone, but everywhere - and because of it, it didn't feel heavy.

And leather armour: No. They used "Gambeson", if they couldn't afford a mix of Gambeson and Chainmail.

... Don't you mean "your character"? If I dress my character (male or female) in armor showing skin, it's not myself dressing in such a way...
And I never adopted the slutshaming mentality. I don't automatically assume that someone showing skin IRL, sleeps around so guess I apply that to characters in this +12 game as well.

Never knew that people put so much thought into it though, so that's interesting to learn.

Exactly, full plate knights were too heavy to even mount their own horse.

When time went on we got things like Lances and Pikes to throw them off their horse instead of trying to penetrate their armor.

Lancers and Sabre cavalry were used until early WW2, tanks and more effective guns/cannons changed that.

Horse police still exists tho , but really those don't "fight" armies of gunman/pikeman.

Well yeah, there's a reason for everything. Going out of your way to make your character look like a slut means something, it sends a message, maybe it's not even conscious. There's a reason why some people like it and some don't. I guess it can even be as stupid as some sheeple movement started by the first few comments of people being offended by slutmog, dragging others along the way.
I don't really know, but it's still weird to put so much effort into trying to make a video game character look "sexy".

I've occasionally seen it as a topic on the general forum: players wanting a few more options for skimpy armor. Every time there is a large amount of opposition against it. But why?

The most common argument I've seen is that it isn't realistic. That for example, a Warrior isn't going to go to a fight showing off their legs and middriff. This one I've understood the least since Warcraft is pretty much defined by unrealistic weapons and armor. For instance the first tier in Warlord of Draenor has warriors sporting armor that seems to have an internal furnace built in, spinning chain saws on over sized pauldrons, and a giant lava filled, spiked, fire belching belt, all of which would not only prevent the warrior from moving, but also very likely cause them extreme harm. Not only that, but why would a heavy plated armor defend someone from say, a hyper charge bolt of lightning, any more than skimpy belly showing armor? Not to mention no one has any problem with hiding head gear.

Another common argument is the all to common "You're just immature if you want sexy armor". Once more, looking at other armors in the game they tend to be over designed, filled with bright colors, completely none-sensical, often with themes that you would most commonly find doodled in a middle schoolers text book. Warcraft is more or less defined by rule of cool. Saying a plate-kini is any more immature than wearing the glowing bones of a dragon is asanine. They are both their own kind of immature, and thats fine. Thats what the setting is all about. Its a setting where people go around wielding giant swords bigger than they are with edgy backstories like "This sword drank the darkness of an evil god" or "These swords are from the remnants of a vampiric soul eating rune blade".

So why are so many against skimpy armor? Seems even blizzard is, which is a bit ironic given how many of their designs are blatantly pandering especially when it comes to showing off men.

Evidently there is a much larger populaton of very prude ppl playing wow than anyone had suspected earlier.

There are some pieces, but I think they're mostly leather? Horde has the Orgrimmar chestpiece which any armor type can mog into. I use it together with the Tusks of Mannoroth for a "berserker" look on my male orc warrior.

But he's a SLUT for showing all that skin so I should probably make him walk the walk of shame... Anyone volounteer to follow him around chanting "shame"?
