He'll still owe the 10M. 6 months is just for refusal to pay. After 6 months he'll get out and still owe 10M. It's not an either-or.

Exactly better to be single and well off, than married and living in a cardboard box when the marriage goes south..

Well the one thing is in prison you get free accommodation and free meals, and a new partner to boot..

I get your joke, but seriously though, I think people who are only too willing to pick prison over a slightly tough to swallow slap on the face probably have some weird fetishes....

It's like refusing to do community service and instead opting for imprisonment.

Is car insurance an admission that you'll get in an accident? A prenup is basically marriage insurance. You don't want things to end poorly, but if it does you can shield yourself from this sort of thing in case the divorce is ugly (or you're a greedy bastard like the guy in this story).

Which is why what now can only be done via prenup should just be the law (nobody gets anything, everyone keeps what they own and what they earned. If one of the couple bought the house, they get to keep it, for instance).

That way you can take all the moralizing out of it.

No, it's not. It's protection in case things go south. Just like insurance.

That is why making it a requrement for everyone would help, because then it wouldn't be such an admission anymore, it would be an obligation.

No, it is not. Try reading the facts of the actual case. The $10 million figure is the dividing of the assets.

    It's half the marital assets.

What makes you assume he "owns" 100% of the marital assets?

What a shocking read!! Much more at the link.

The audacity of this guy. A second woman in Asia and then when the divorce settlement comes, he prefers to go to prison? I mean really? You really have to wonder what's going on in some peoples' minds..

Do you think the ruling was fair? 10 million? Given what took place?
I rather go to prison and either have my wealth being safely kept or given to my immediate family (brother aunt, etc). I would not give a dime to a women.

Not just to a stranger. To your wife. Your companion of decades.

    I don't know, do you?

Also how many assets did she bring to the marriage?

It's almost like we should have some kind of court procedure to determine these things.

What does that matter in case of a divorce? It's absurd that someone should be set for life just because of a divorce.
