    A 22-year-old Colombian model sentenced to death in China for drug smuggling

    A Colombian model was arrested during a trip to China for allegedly possessing drugs in her computer and is now facing the death penalty.

    The family and friends of 22-year-old Juliana Lopez told the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo that the beauty pageant winner has been detained in China after leaving for the country two weeks ago.

    She is being charged with smuggling psychoactive drugs in her computer, which in China is punishable by life in prison or the death penalty. She was arrested July 18 at the airport in Guangzhou, the newspaper reported.

    Lopez was scheduled to compete in the Miss World Medellin pageant this week but instead is sitting in a Chinese jail as her family desperately tries to work with international officials to help her.

    Sometimes that happens, but the "I don't know whose drugs those are" or the "I have no idea how those drugs got their" don't really go well with any law enforcement group

    China and Iran are both very big on killing drug smugglers, not sure how they are with drug problem in those places.

    OT: If she's innocent and was forced to do this, hopefully that comes out. I have doubts that she is though. I've seen several stories this week of models trying to smuggle drugs, and it seems quite a few of them get caught up in this stuff willingly. If that's the case then she's damn stupid for either not knowing the law, or knowing it and still taking the risk.

    It's amazing how brutal the drug laws are in some of these countries where living conditions are terrible for the vast majority of the population. Why does China put such a focus on issues like this when the majority of the country seem to live like circa 1700 peasant farmers?

    The laws are harsh probably because of 1. the business involves a lot of money 2. the government doesn't control it
