Business owners do not operate in this country with the freedom to deny service to anyone for any reason. Denying a person for being Korean? Illegal. Denying a person for being Hindu? Illegal. About the only thing business owners can't discriminate against that is actually a choice is religion, and seeing as sexuality is not a choice, it should be protected like all the other unchangeable characteristics about an individual.

Works fine in towns with more than one of that sort of store, and where the vast majority of people in that town don't support the bigotry. But that's not the case in many places.

Plus, it doesn't account for services that aren't fixed storefronts. If you're gay and you don't know beforehand if that taxi driver is going to kick you out of his cab the minute he finds out you're gay, it can be a bit of an inconvenience.
